About me
Maroš Šefčovič is the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency for the 2024–2029 term. A seasoned Slovak diplomat and EU official, he is responsible for strengthening the EU’s global trade position, securing critical supply chains, managing trade relations, and implementing the European Economic Security Strategy. He also leads institutional coordination within the EU, enhances transparency, and improves ethical standards across institutions.
Previously, Šefčovič served in multiple high-level roles, including European Commissioner for Energy, Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight, and Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal. Before joining the Commission, he was Slovakia’s Ambassador to the EU, playing a key role in the country’s Eurozone and Schengen integration.
He holds a degree from MGIMO in Moscow, a PhD in international law from Comenius University, and completed diplomatic training at Stanford University. He is married with three children and lives in Brussels.
