About me
Ambassador Christopher Hayes Onanuga is a distinguished entrepreneur, visionary leader, advertising, media, and brand executive, and international advocate whose career spans more than three decades of excellence in business, diplomacy, and social impact. With a reputation for resilience, innovation, and bold leadership, he has established a legacy of shaping industries and influencing public discourse across West Africa, the United States, and the Caribbean.
Over the past 35 years, Ambassador Onanuga has founded and led multiple companies in diverse sectors including communications, information technology, oil and gas, and real estate. He is the founder and CEO of CT COM International, CT DOT COM, and CT Com Gas enterprises with footprints in Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, and the United States. He is also the proprietor of KOOL 91.9 FM, one of Liberia’s leading radio stations, and maintains equity stakes in several leading newspapers across the region.
Ambassador Onanuga is also advancing Liberia’s green economy through the development of a 600-acre agri-tourism farm, integrating crop production, animal husbandry, and eco-resort infrastructure. His commitment to public recognition and excellence is evident through his leadership of the National Excellence Awards of Liberia and his longstanding mentorship of youth in media, governance, and entrepreneurship.
His corporate achievements are matched by his civic and diplomatic service. In 2024, Ambassador Onanuga was appointed Ambassador-at-Large for Tourism by the President of Liberia, a role in which he is charged with revitalizing the country's dormant tourism sector. His appointment came at a pivotal moment, and his first directive, successfully executed, was the drafting and passage of the law establishing the Liberia National Tourism Authority, the first of its kind in the country. Under his guidance, Liberia is now on the path toward positioning tourism as a major pillar of national development and job creation.
A respected international voice, Ambassador Onanuga has represented Liberia at global forums, including the United Nations World Tourism Conference in the Dominican Republic. He continues to advocate for Africa’s inclusion in the global tourism conversation, promoting investment, sustainability, and cross-cultural exchange.
Beyond business and diplomacy, he is a passionate advocate for media freedom and civic engagement. Through KOOL FM and its online platform, Knewsonline, Ambassador Onanuga provides an avenue for credible journalism and public accountability. His leadership in convening the Presidential Media Dinner under the current administration has redefined how media and government engage in constructive dialogue.
His career, however, has not been without challenges. From his days as a student leader in Nigeria, Ambassador Onanuga took bold stands in defense of justice, leading protests, challenging authority, and even engaging in direct confrontation with former dictator General Sani Abacha. He also played a pivotal role in supporting the political rise of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, contributing significantly to mobilization efforts during a fragile democratic transition.
Upon returning to Liberia, he engaged in policy disagreements and direct confrontations with the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration, challenging governance issues and clashing with key cabinet members. His most difficult period came in 2016, when he was indicted in the high-profile Sable Mining trial, a politically charged legal ordeal from which he emerged unscathed after a year-long prosecution. Again in 2019, he faced political friction under the George Weah administration, prompting a renewed focus on strategic engagement and national reform.
These experiences deepened his resolve to contribute to change. He became an influential voice behind the scenes in Liberia’s 2023 democratic transition, which ushered in President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. In recognition of his enduring patriotism and expertise, he was appointed Presidential Special Envoy on Tourism, a role that reflects his transformation from opposition figure to a key actor in Liberia’s policy and development landscape.
A lifelong mentor and youth advocate, Ambassador Onanuga’s leadership journey began in his formative years. As a student in Nigeria, he stood at the forefront of social justice movements, policy reform advocacy, and national student resistance against economic hardship. Those early encounters with resistance and reform laid the foundation for his identity as a transnational strategist and principled thought leader.
Ambassador Onanuga is a man of vision, tenacity, and unshakable commitment to national progress. His ability to rise beyond adversity, lead through change, and foster opportunity across borders has earned him the recognition of a “citizen without borders” a title that speaks to his enduring influence, character, and devotion to the public good.
