Jean‑François Marteau currently manages the Transport team covering the Sahel, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea‑Bissau, The Gambia, and Cabo Verde. Previously, he served as the World Bank’s Country Manager for Kazakhstan in the Europe and Central Asia Region and as Global Lead for Transport Infrastructure Management and Financing within the Transport Practice. Earlier in his career, Mr. Marteau coordinated the World Bank’s sustainable development activities in European Union member states, providing advisory services to the European Commission and national governments across transport policy, water sector reform, regional and urban development, and infrastructure investment. He has led major investment programs in Africa, Europe, and Central Asia, including initiatives in corridor management, urban transport, and reforms in the road, rail, and aviation sectors, and managed the Sub‑Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program. Prior to joining the World Bank in 2002, Mr. Marteau held several positions in the French public administration, including Advisor to the Minister of Transport in Côte d’Ivoire and coordinator of programs for the French Development Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He holds engineering and economics degrees from École Polytechnique and École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.
