Project Pitch

The Chilemba Project - In 2022, PHAL launched the Chilemba Project, an out-grower scheme co-funded by the Enterprise Zambia Challenge Fund (EZCF), an EU-funded programme. The project focuses on the production of dry beans and other leguminous crops through smallholder farmers, with a target of empowering 20,000 farmers by 2030.

To date, the company has empowered 6,000 smallholder farmers, of which 87% are women and youth, by providing farming input loans, guaranteed market access, and training in Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA). The initiative promotes sustainable farming practices and supports inclusive economic growth by improving productivity, resilience, and livelihoods among rural farming communities.

PHAL aims to expand the Chilemba Project by scaling production, improving aggregation and distribution systems, and enhancing farmer training to increase yields and market competitiveness, while contributing to Zambia’s national food security and export potential.
