Project Pitch
The Omega3 fish canning project proposes establishing Mozambique’s first large-scale sardine and tuna cannery, with an installed capacity of 40 metric tons per day (approximately 12,000 MT annually at full utilization). The facility would process locally sourced sardines and tuna landed along Mozambique’s 2,700 km coastline, transforming raw marine resources into high-value canned products for domestic, regional (SADC), and European Union markets. The business case is driven by strong global demand and attractive EU import prices—around US$5,000 per MT for sardines and US$6,300 per MT for tuna—supporting projected annual revenues of US$60–70 million at full capacity. Mozambique currently has no domestic canning industry and relies entirely on imports for its local canned fish market, creating a clear import-substitution and first-mover opportunity. Under the SADC–EU Economic Partnership Agreement, the project can benefit from duty-free EU access through cumulation rules, combining Mozambican fish with regionally sourced inputs such as oil and packaging. Beyond export earnings, the project is expected to generate 150–200 direct jobs, strengthen artisanal fishing livelihoods, and support Mozambique’s broader blue economy and industrialization strategy.
