Project Pitch
SAIL is involved in the plantation of sugar cane. We are planning to invest in a processing plant to produce sugar using cane from our farm, as well as other cane supplied by farmers in the surrounding areas through an outgrow scheme. The project is located in Sabie, Moamba, Maputo Province. It is located some 65Km from Xinavane Sugar Plant, currently operated by Tongaat Hullet, a South African company. We are approaching the project in phases. At this stage, the project will cover some 405 Hectares (338 Ha irrigated through 4 Centre PIVOTs and 67 Ha using sprinklers or drip irrigation), of which 113 Ha (using two centre pivot irrigation systems) is currently implemented and in operation. If fully implemented, the 405 hectares will produce 57,000 Tons of cane per year. We invested close to US$2 million in equity by 2024. So far, more investment has been made, mainly to buy two trucks and 5 trailers, valued at US$464,000 through bank financing and some co-funding. The total investment done so far (2023 – Sept 2025) is estimated at US$3 million. The project cost is estimated at USD 8.3 million (land development, irrigation system, agriculture, and transport equipment), of which we are looking for funding of approx. US$6 million (some 70%) to develop an additional 338Ha to reach 405Ha. All sugar cane produced is sold at Xinavane Sugar Plant through an offtake contract currently in place. In the coming years, we plan to continue to develop new land to reach 2,200Ha, which will require an additional funding of approx. US$9.2 Million (land development and irrigation system), taking the total investment to approximately US$25 million by 2035. We plan to set up a sugar processing plant which the concept note is currently available. The construction of the new sugar plant is expected from 2028 and commissioning by 2030. The next step: i) a pre-feasibility study and ii) a bankable feasibility study. The sugar production plant is estimated to cost around US$25 million, with an installed capacity of 1,250 Tons of Cane (TCD) per day or 240,000 Tons per year, generating an output of 24,000 Tons of Sugar per year.
