Project Pitch

Organic Waste to Energy Project Pre-feasibility Study (Accra Biogas Project).

The project addresses critical urban sanitation and environmental health risks caused by inadequate waste management, where approximately 65.5 tonnes per day of waste remains uncollected and released into the environment. Existing infrastructure is overwhelmed, with the Sofokrom landfill expected to reach capacity by 2027. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (specifically methane), mitigate flooding risks associated with blocked drains, and regularize the working conditions of the informal sector. The project involves establishing a solid waste management system based on a two-bag (Option 1) or three-bag (Option 2) segregation system. Key components include:

  • Construction of a biodigestion plant for organic waste treatment.
  • Support for an existing Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Takoradi by adding organic treatment options.
