Project Pitch
Redevelopment of Eastern Railway Line Infrastructure in Standard Gauge
The project will consist of redevelopment of the Eastern Railway Line in standard gauge from Tema-Accra through Achimota to BILT and then to Kumasi.
The scope of works will comprise:
Redevelopment of 328 km railway lines from Tema and Accra through Achimota to Kumasi via BILT in standard gauge.
Connection of the line to the Tema Railhead and Maintenance Facility.
Construction of maintenance facility at BILT.
Construction of bridges, culverts and retaining walls.
Rehabilitation of existing bridges, stations and halts.
Construction of new stations, halts and other operating facilities.
Signalling and communication system.
Supply of 4no. locomotives, 150no. wagons and 4no. DMUs.
Supply of track maintenance equipment.
Supply of rail recovery equipment.
The expected public service outcomes include:
Passenger Transport & Safety: The line is designed to operate both freight and passenger services, providing a safer and faster alternative to road transport.
Efficient Freight Logistics: It will directly link the Tema Port to the BILT in the Ashanti Region, significantly reducing transportation costs for goods, improving food security, and facilitating cargo movement to landlocked neighbours.
Reduced Road Deterioration: By shifting heavy freight (such as cement and petroleum) from roads to rail, the project is expected to decrease road accidents and reduce the high maintenance costs caused by overloaded cargo trucks.
Economic & Employment Impact: The project is projected to boost national GDP by at least 1.5% annually, with thousands of jobs created during both construction and operational phases.
Modernization & Integration: The project will create a modern standard-gauge network, connecting key towns and supporting the regional development of the central corridor of Ghana.
Enhanced Passenger Mobility: Improved, faster, and more affordable passenger travel between Tema, Accra and Kumasi.
